Westham

Westham means the village at the west of the castle.

The pub is called the Castle. There are three shops, a chemist, the newsagent and a bakers/post office. There is also a hair dressers. (Charlie E.)
Our village is nice and friendly. We have a pond, a church, and a fish & chip shop There is a farm with a camp site and lots of animals. there are lots of lambs born in the spring. There are sometimes Ghost walks through the castle. There is a village Doctor's surgery which is really friendly. Kirstie V.
In between the bakers and the chemist are some Victorian houses. A lot of the houses are very old. The schools was built a long time ago and is still in good condition. Next door to the school is St Mary's church. The church was built by the Normans. Sometimes the ducks from the pond walk up to people's houses and try and get food. Lauren D.

There used to be another pond near the school, where they dug out clay for bricks. Church Bailey is built there now. The roads aren't very busy. Montague Way was built on old railway sidings. Cattle used to go by train from here. names like Montague, Mortain and Montfort reflect the Norman invasion. Hannah R.

The people in Montfort Close where I live paid for 4 special ducks. They are Pochards. There is a Village hall round the other side of the pond. It has a lot of village events there and anyone can hire it. I had my birthday party and my christening party there too.

Above:Westham High Street looking East towards the Church and Castle. The school is just behind the building on the right, 50 metres ahead, and just by the two people in the lower picture. A lot of people come to the Castle. Sometimes in the summer there are special events. Our railway station is small but it is good for going to Hampden park where my Granddad lives or Hastings where my Nanny lives. Church Bailey is flats for old people and my Nana lives there. The pub is called The Castle. I'm not allowed in there but sometimes my mummy and Daddy go. Nicci W.
Some of the old houses have timber frames and were built in the 16th century.

There is a healing centre in the village where people can go for homeopathic healing. This means making people better using herbs and plants rather than medicine from the Doctor. The fish and chip shop used to be called The Swan Lake Cafe because it was by a big lake but there are houses there now. Chloe W.

Near the pond is the old blacksmiths forge. There is an old photo of this in the chip shop. Our village was rural and existed because of farming. Rachael S.
