The need for the staple food stuff everyday is mainly to gain energy, the body will have evolved over generations to survive on the most readily available foodstuff in the local. This can be highlighted as a contributing factor in the large number of Japanese POW's that died during the war. The radical change in diet in addition to the other stresses could have been a major factor, there were approximately 40% POW casualties in Japanese camps compared to 10% in German camps.
Keep a simple, consistent diet. This is linked again to the body's ability to process specific types of food. An example of this is vegetarians that have eaten no meat for many years have been physically sick when meat was introduced in to their diet. This was not due to a psychological, moral problem but a physical reaction to the food being rejected.
Additional general advice would be to eat 5 portions of fruit or vegetables per day and to eat your staple for breakfast.
