THE EXPRESSIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS FACULTY

The subject areas within this faculty are as follows:

For pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3)
ALL pupils will take part in a range of activities which will give them opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge within active areas of the curriculum. The emphasis within all courses is on a pupil's willingness to become involved in a wide variety of timetabled and extra-curricular sessions.

Art and Design:
There are currently two Attainment Targets

1. Investigating and making - (2/3} 2. Knowledge and understanding - (1/3

This course requires a pupil to take part in a range of activities; from drawing and painting to working with clay; experiencing basic printing methods and working with plaster. The use of reference material is encouraged at all times and pupils will be expected to use a sketchbook for personal studies related to classroom themes and topics. The relationship between past works of art, individual artists and styles, and present practice, is an essential part of the course.

When the opportunity arises working artists/designers may visit the school, and hold workshops for a number of pupils. The role of the artist as a designer, producing creative solutions to problems, is experienced.

Music:
Within Key Stage3 Music follows the National Curriculum with two thirds of time being given to Performing and Composing, and one third to Listening and Appraising. Pupils are given the opportunity to work with electronic keyboards, percussion, steel pans, computers etc.

There is currently a team of five visiting teachers providing tuition on a wide range of orchestral instruments. There are opportunities to sing and perform in a variety of groups. In the Listening and Appraising section we consider all types of music, and the instruments used, during the last 400 years, from Purcell to Pop.

Drama:
All pupils in Key Stage 3 have Drama lessons. The lessons are designed to develop self-confidence and also to supplement some of the requirements of Attainment Target 2 in English.

Opportunities exist for pupils to become involved in extra-curricular activities e.g. workshops, school productions etc.

Physical Education:
Within Key Stage 3 pupils have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities. Pupils will acquire new skills and learn to participate in individual and group activities through setting new personal goals. This school has excellent facilities for a wide variety of activities and every pupil has the opportunity to develop interests and a sense of involvement and personal success within and through Physical Education.

This faculty is heavily involved in many extra-curricular activities: from school camps, cross-country and sports day, to a school choir, orchestra and productions.

There is much to become involved with - it really does represent a wealth of opportunity for your son or daughter.
