Community and Support Services Faculty is unlike other faculties in that it is not subject based, instead it deals with major issues that are of concern to the whole school, staff and pupils alike.
It is comprised of four main elements
Personal and Social Education
All pupils follow a course in Personal and Social Education, which is taught by their form tutors during the timetabled period. The purpose of the course is to improve pupils' awareness of their own potential and to provide them with the skills they will need to cope with life whilst at school and beyond. A major part of the course is to develop and foster in all our pupils a feeling of self worth and confidence, as well as to encourage them to look at the world in a critical way and to help them make positive decisions about their lives.
In Year 7 pupils can expect these lessons to be lively and interesting and will involve them in exercises in decision making, looking at their strengths and weaknesses, personal safety, relationships and many other topics that will raise their awareness and hopefully their ability to cope with them in a positive manner.
Vocational awareness and guidance
It is becoming increasingly more important for young people to be aware of the opportunities that are available to them when they leave the school. To this end, we have in the school a tried and tested programme of vocational guidance that encourages pupils to look at all possibilities. In the main much of the work in this area starts at Year 9 when pupils choose the subjects they are going to take to examination level. However, pupils in the lower years will be expected to consider aspects of the world of work as a natural part of the PSE programme.
During the last five years we have developed strong links with industry, in an attempt to bring realistic experiences and practice into the classroom. Pupils at Sir Henry Cooper can look forward to a wide variety of 'first hand' experiences such as; visits to firms, work simulations, work experience for a two week period, outside speakers, mock interviews with employers, and many other activities which are aimed to 'widen their horizons' and give them a practical and realistic insight into what is available.
Much of this has been made possible due to the following, who we have developed a special relationship with, British Aerospace, Hull City Council - Opportunity Centre, Hull City Services, Bishop Burton College, Trustee Savings Bank - TSB, Prospect Training, Hull College and Wyke College.
Community Education
We have much to give and to gain from our relationship with the community. Through learning about the community and being actively involved, it is hoped that pupils will develop a better understanding as well as being able to make an effective and valuable contribution. As well as featuring strongly in the PSE course as units of work, community education also involves outside agencies working with our pupils on projects both in and out of school.
Enterprise Education
It is our aim that all children will at some stage have the experience of being part of an Enterprise scheme. It is important that young people have the opportunity to help run a small business and for them to learn first hand what is involved. Enterprise education teaches and develops the skills of problem solving, research investigation, decision making and communication, and is useful preparatory skills for GCSE courses, as well as giving them a good foundation when they leave the school.
