ENGLISH FACULTY

A11 Year 7 pupils will receive 4 English lessons per week.

Ih English lessons our aims are to enable pupils to develop to their full their ability to use and understand their own language. Through spoken and written work we encourage pupils to explore and express their own ideas, opinions and knowledge. Through listening and reading we enable pupils to understand the views of other people and to make sense of the world around them. Through shared reading of literature we consider our society and culture and give access into the experiences of others.

In line with the National Curriculum pupils will follow our programmes of study, which integrate the basic skills of LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING and WRITING.

Pupils come to the secondary school already in possession of a range of these skills and we aim to build on each individual's existing experience to further develop their proficiency, accuracy and enjoyment. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying and supporting special needs; individual schemes of work can be provided to help overcome difficulties or extend talents.

The purpose in Year 7 is learning through enjoyment. Pupils will experience a variety of classroom approaches, which may involve drama, information technology, and video programmed stories by new authors as well as familiar favourites. The English Faculty maintains close links with the school's Information Centre and Library. The Faculty has access to a computer suite with 14 Pentium 100 CD ROM computers.
