Pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 in 1996-97 will spend 4 hours each week in the Humanities Faculty. They will be studying National Curriculum topics in History, Geography and Religious Studies.
The History topics will be taught chronologically. Pupils wit build on their knowledge from Primary School by studying "The Roman Empire" and "Medieval Realms" in Year 7, then looking at "The Making of the United Kingdom", "Towns and Trade" and "The American Indians" in Year 8.
Geography topics will range from "The School Site" and "Our Local Area", in Year 7, to "The Environment", "Rivers" "British Regions" and "Developing Countries" in Year 8
Three Religious Studies units called "What is a Christian?", "The Life of Jesus" and "Choices" will also be covered in Humanities lessons.
Almost all of our pupils say that they enjoy the variety that they get in Humanities. They have to work hard, and there are lots of different things to do. In one week's lessons, for example, pupils might mount a wall display, watch a video, act in a play, go on a visit or survey, use a computer or camcorder all this in addition to working in their books!
There is always something happening in Humanities to keep the pupils active and involved.
As teachers, we try to make our lessons interesting and enjoyable - then, we find the pupils don't realise how hard they are actually working!
