The emphasis in modern languages is on enjoyment and pupil participation. The faculty is proud of its state of the art language laboratory to which all pupils have regular access in order to develop and practice their listening and speaking skills. We have a large selection of computer programmes which are used to reinforce reading and writing skills and a satellite dish receives broadcasts from French and German TV stations.
At Sir Henry Cooper School all pupils study at least one modern foreign language. Currently this is French.
In line with the National Curriculum, pupils' work and progress are monitored closely and parents are regularly informed of levels achieved and of assessment results.
Although pupils do follow course books in both French and German there is a wealth of additional material which teachers use with their classes to reinforce or extend the youngsters' understanding.
Each year there is a school visit to France or Germany arranged for pupils so that they all may have the opportunity to practise their language skills and experience at first hand life in a foreign country. For many of these youngsters this may be the first time they have been abroad and the staff accompanying the group work very hard to ensure that each child has an enjoyable and profitable experience.
At the end of their first year at Sir Henry Cooper School, all pupils in year 7 participate in the wide range of activities and events of Euroweek. During Euroweek the youngsters take a wider look at Europe they will complete project work, have visits from outside speakers - in past years we have had talks by Mr Cram our MEP, the Midland Bank, representatives from various churches, and many themselves visit various centres in and around Hull.
The week ends with the Europicnic a social and educational event that is one of many highlights of their first year at Sir Henry Cooper School.
