SCIENCE

Year 7 pupils at Sir Henry Cooper School study SCIENCE for 3 periods each week. The pupils will be organised into 'ability' groups and will be taught Physics, Chemistry and Biology, by specialist teachers. Each child will be allocated a "Base Tutor" to monitor progress and report to parents.

The staff feels that the National Curriculum does benefit your child. Science is a CORE subject and involves many skills. There will be continuity with work undertaken in the primary school. The material taught is structured in such a way as to make it possible to stretch the able whilst offering support to the slow learner. Youngsters arriving from their primary school cannot fail to be impressed by the practical facilities that exist. In science they will already be familiar with the scientific method and skills that we employ. Teaching is designed to encourage productive teamwork whilst using scientific measuring devices and apparatus.

There is a continual effort by the staff to encourage pupils to take a more and more responsible attitude towards their own learning needs. Extension work including homework is made available to encourage a commitment towards the learning process. Parent participation in this process is always appreciated.

All aspects of science are studied by all pupils and are equally popular with both boys and girls.
