Lesson plan for 'visual literacy'
TUESDAY Re-visit the picture Tissot - The Picnic- Whole class. (5 mins) The naming word activity - Whole class for introduction and then 4 mixed ability groups.
Focus - Use and understanding of nouns.
Teacher explores nouns with children. Explain that they are naming words. Find and name objects within the classroom. Also introduce adjectives, words which can be used to describe the noun.
Each group is given an A4 colour copy of The Picnic on an A3 sheet, laminated, and a dry wipe pen. Children to label everything that they can see in the picture. Extension - in different colour pen add adjectives to describe the nouns. (20 mins)
Class comes together on the carpet. Look at what we have found in the picture. Have we all labelled the same items? Has any group found someting that no other group has spotted. (10 mins)
Thank you letter activity - Whole class. To write for a purpose, to work collaboratively and discuss the quality of what is written.
Teacher leads discussion. Explain that we will be writing a thank you note to the host of the party. Who do we think is the host? Discuss what we will wish to thank the host for - things we can see in the picture and things we can imagine. Teacher scribes the thank you note on the board accomodating the suggestions of the children. Read back what is written - how can we improve it? (20 mins)
(Completed note can be typed out and photocopied for each of the children)
Plenary - Whole class Revisit nouns - recap some of the describing words found in the first exercise. (5 mins)
