What do they think that the characters are thinking? Write out the word bubbles and blutack to the pictures. (20 mins)
Come together as a class and look at our speech/thought bubbles. Take the best speech/thought bubbles and add to a class picture. This can be photocopied as a record. (10 mins)
Poetry from Painting Activity - Whole class led by Teacher Focus - To develop interesting language through response to picture.
Whole class studies picture and is asked to give words that are suggested by the picture. Teacher asks for colours seen in the picture and records on board or large sheet of paper., i.e. brown, orange, yellow, etc. Then for shapes in picture i.e. oval, circle, line, triangle, etc. Then ask what mood is suggested i.e. happy, sleepy, romantic, etc.
Use an indefinite or definite article and one word from each list to make a surreal new title for the painting i.e. A triangular orange happiness, The romantic yellow circle, etc.
Extend by finding general words suggested by the picture i.e. cap, lake, leaves, etc. or by asking for words suggested by the food i.e. cake, grapes, tea, etc. the characters i.e old, quiet, staring, etc.
Take one or two words from each list and put together, with added connectives etc, to make an interesting sounding nonsense phrase i.e Brown triangle lines are sleepy but happy, the quiet cakes stare at the leaves. (25 mins)
