The School building and playground

Pennington Infants was built to the SCOLA design in the early 1960's. The school underwent a major refurbishment in 2001 when the old wooden skin of the building was replaced with brightly coloured steel double glazed units. It stands on a large site shared with Pennington Junior School, Priestlands School and Lymington Recreation Centre. The school has six large classrooms, two in each year group, a large hall and administrative offices. It is all one level, affording easy wheelchair access.

The school is surrounded by green fields and trees and three hundred metres away we have the Priestlands School lakes, a wonderful new natural resource where the children can go pond dipping, sketching and can go on nature and science walks.

Our large playgrounds are enhanced by painted games, activities and a jogging trail.

From the main playground there is a path, with wooden benches, to a shady deck under the trees. This is the 'quiet area' of the playground where children can relax and talk to each other.

We also have a splendid wooden adventure playground, which was constructed through the kind sponsorship of ESSO. This was also iven a major overhaul in the summer of 2004 to bring it into line with the latest safety recommendations. The children are allowed to use the adventure playground on a class by class rotation system so that it does not get too crowded. The children love this facility and look forward to their turn to use it.

In the centre of the school is a courtyard which provides a safe play area for the Reception children. There is a wooden train, wooden houses, slides, a sand pit, bicycles and scooters for the children to play on. There is direct access to the courtyard from the reception classrooms.
