Mayflower's English Faculty is highly successful. The experienced teaching team comprises eight full time specialist teachers, four part-time teachers and an AST. Accommodation is largely grouped around the English staff office and resources include TV/video units, DVDs, Data projector, three interactive whiteboards, a video camera, overhead projectors and a computer room, which is linked into the school network. The Faculty also has its own computer and editing suite.
English is taught in mixed-ability groups in Years 7 to 11. KS3 assessment is well developed and is constantly being updated in line with the National Literacy Strategy. The GCSE syllabus is the unified NEAB Specification A (dual certification); most students are entered for English Language and Literature. In the sixth form English is a popular option. There are more than 85 students currently taking A or AS Level English Literature, English Language/Literature (Edexcel Syllabus) and AS Level Media Studies.
The English Faculty achieves impressive examination results at all levels, particularly at GCSE (A*-A 28% A-C 77%). A Level Literature results are also impressive (A-C 70% and 83% English Language/Literature combined A Level). At Key Stage 3, 88% attained a level 5 or better with 43% reaching level 6 and above.
The teachers currently teaching English are experienced, innovative, energetic and enthusiastic and work well, both as individuals and as a team. Teachers are encouraged to enjoy their work, set high standards and take risks. As a result the majority of students are highly motivated, take pride in their work and strive to meet our high expectations.
The English staff are keen to contribute beyond the confines of the syllabuses. Among extra-curricular activities organised by them are Public Speaking competitions, competitive debates, a book club, creative writing club, theatre visits, a bookshop and visits by authors/storytellers/theatre groups. In addition, many staff have whole-school responsibilities and assiduously support a variety of school activities. There are also positive links between English and other departments, notably Information Technology, Educational Support, Drama and the Learning Resource Centre.
