INTRODUCTION
The Physical Education department is young, enthusiastic and currently consists of 3 male and 4 female teachers. The department is highly successful, producing excellent results in GCSE and ‘A’ level examinations. A broad and balanced curriculum is offered and all students are encouraged to fulfil their potential. The department offers students a wide range of extra-curricular activities both recreational and competitive and has a high degree of sporting success in district and county competitions. The department achieved the Sportsmark award in June 1999 in recognition of the quality of its Physical Education programme. There are a number of opportunities for professional development within the department and the school.
FACILITIES Mayflower High School has excellent facilities for Physical Education, including:
Sports Hall; Gymnasium; Indoor Heated Swimming Pool; Weight Training Room; 2 hard court areas with 6 netball and 6 tennis courts; Tartan all weather long jump areas; all weather cricket strip; extensive playing fields.
KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM All students have 2 lessons of Physical Education in years 7, 8 and 9. At present they are taught in single sex classes and these classes are broadly set. All students receive a balanced curriculum based on National Curriculum guidelines and include:
Games (netball, rugby, football, basketball, striking games, racquet games); athletics; swimming; dance/gymnastics, health.
KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM/GCSE PE All students in Year 11 study either full course GCSE (Edexcel), short course GCSE or Certificate of Entry Level PE (AQA). GCSE students have 6 lessons of PE a fortnight. All Year 10 and 11 students have 3 lessons of compulsory PE a fortnight.
ASSESSMENT Key Stage 3 students receive interim reports on their behaviour, effort and progress 3 times a year in line with the schools assessment policy. Students receive a grade at the end of each term for their attainment and effort. The department’s assessment policy is currently in line with the National Curriculum levels.
Key Stage 4 students are set targets and graded on their progress in their termly progress reports. Staff assess students at the end of each unit against the exam board criteria.
‘A’ LEVEL PHYSICAL EDUCATION The ‘A’ level PE course has run since 1992 and is a popular option. Students currently follow the OCR syllabus in ‘A’ and A/S examination. There are currently 12 A2 students and 8 AS students.
