Born into a farming family in the Dales outside Shadowdale, Rufus is the second son of a moderately well to do farming family. He also has a younger sister, Niamh, and the two were very close until Rufus was disowned. Rufus still misses his sister very much and so is very courteous to women and will not stand to see them mistreated. Both Rufus and Niamh worshipped their elder brother, Raoul. Raoul was set to inherit the farm from their parents and Rufus, being the second child, was sent into Shadowdale to learn a second trade, blacksmithing. He was apprenticed to a local blacksmith and soon increased his already formidable strength.
Unfortunately Raoul was killed by a band of marauding Orcs so Rufus was summoned back to the farm to take over the running of it from his aging parents. He rebelled against this, instead preferring to learn how to fight in order to avenge his brother's death. By turning his back on the farm Rufus earned the ire of his grief-stricken father, Thom, and was disowned. Both his mother, Nynex and sister hold out hope that the family rift will one day be healed. Thom has stated that the farm will form a dowry for whoever marries Naimh. This has resulted in a large number of (in Rufus' opinion unsuitable) suitors beating a path to Naimh's door. Thom feels betrayed by Rufus and has stated that Naimh shall marry the richest of her suitors on her sixteenth birthday. The wedding shall be on the Midsummer Festival three years hence.
Rufus has occupied himself searching for clues to the band of creatures who killed his brother. Rufus has a passionate hatred of Orcs and will kill them wherever he can.
Following the Gods Tempus and Helm he has largely forsaken his family adherence to Chauntea in favour of a more martial philosophy.
Rufus has a current goal of becoming lord of this particular part of Shadowdale so that he can set up a more effective militia to defend the population.
