Our day in Ancient
Rome
At Priestthorpe First School we had a Roman day. A
dressed up centurion came to talk to us. It was fun and to
top it all off we had a Roman feast with grapes and chicken
and all that stuff. We had a number of Roman activities too.
The first picture shows me being asked questions by the
centurion about how old you had to be to join the Roman
army.

The Centurion
Here is a picture of the centurion that came to our
school, he was very strict. He had lots of interesting
things , like a sword, a shield, an oil lamp, and a helmet.
We did an Argos catalogue. We all got a certificate from the
emperor Hadrian - we had a fun day!

A new recruit to the
legion
The second photo is of me wearing the Roman battle dress,
it is made from pieces of tin metal and it is fastened up
with leather. I wouldn't like to have been a Roman soldier
two thousand years ago because boy, my elbows were still
hurting 3 weeks later!

In full armour
And finally the last picture is of me in the full armour
with a spear that was almost twice as big as me. I also have
a helmet on my head as you can probably see. The helmet was
made out of steel and was fastened at the bottom by a bit of
leather. The helmet is very clever because spears will just
bounce off it. I have also got a big square shield that was
red.

Saluting
All the armies in the world had a movement that meant
something. The Romans had a very clever one, it was done
like this.... you put a hand across your heart, then you put
your arm straight in front of you and finally you drop your
arm to the side of your body.
