All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!!!

Although we are at school most of the time and have a lot of homework to do, we can make time for practicing other talents; music and drama, for example. Therefore, we go to a special school, called ' the Academy for Word and Music' ( picture 1). It's not the usual thing to do, it's voluntary and we have to pay for it.

When you choose the 'Word' course - like Nele, Veerle and Tine- you learn how to get rid of the Flemish accent. As you probably know, we talk all sorts of dialects ( Antwerps, Gents, Brugs , etc ..) which are destructive for the pronunciation of our standard language : 'Dutch'. The course consists of several degrees (forms). The numbers of lessons a week depend on the form you are in. It's really exciting, interesting and relaxing. It's no real 'school' . Sometimes we have a public presentation to show the people what we are doing in the lessons.

Besides pronunciation exercises we also have dramatic expression. Is music more interesting to you? No problem. As we have already mentioned, the academy has also a complete program to study music, spread over quite a lot of years. You're nothing when you don't know how to read musical notes. So, that's what you do the first year. When you aren't fed up with it after this first year ( it has the reputation of being quite boring) you can choose an instrument and follow about nine years school of music. That's what Evelien did. Next year she completes her last year.

After a whole year you have to pass an exam in front of a jury. Both word and music require such a "prove-what-you-can" test to be allowed in the next form. The pictures are taken on a performance and in the school of music to illustrate our activities in the department 'Word & Music'.
