1. Teachers involved in the project: Hil Daynes; Julie Little; Fiona Pyrgos;
Frank Bristow; Caroline Parry, Brian Stebbings; Richard D'Silva and Steve
Richardson.
2. There will be 132 children taking part - that really is too many to name!
3. Given that the school is on a 170ha site, the latitude and longitude
figure will approximate to the location of the recording instruments:
LAT: 50.51'N and 2.11'W. 85 m.a.s.l.
4. The school is just to the north of the town of Blandford (population
10,000), about 175km to the south west of London, and about 20km from the
south coast. It is sited on the east facing valley side of the River Stour.
The local area is mainly taken up with farms and forestry, and the largest
bulit-up area is Poole-Bournemouth-Christchurch, which is about 18km to the
south east and has a population of some 200,000.
5. Time of readings: 0900hrs
6. We have a Davis automatic weather station, whose accuracy is verified by
checking against other instruments. This is on top of a roof of one of the
buildings of the main school - the most exposed site available, as there are
many trees and shrubs around the school grounds.
8. The weather for this time of year is liable to be very mixed. Given
anticyclonic conditions, we can have prolonged periods of "gloom". However,
we are near to the English Channel and deep depressions are common giving
heavy rainfall and flooding. If we have a run of north westerlies, it is
likley that we will have clear sunny days and cold nights with biting
frosts. Alternatively, periods of extended misty damp muggy greyness are not
unknown. If the current blocking pattern persists, then we could expect
settled conditions, but I expect that it will deteriorate towards the end of
the month and give a more westerly airflow access to the region.
