Students Involved:14 - 15 year olds, too many to give names.
School Situation: Approx. 20' 11" south and 28' 38" east
at an altitude of 1380m.The school is in a residential suburb on the south
eastern side of town about 5km. from the CBD. We have about 660 pupils
ranging from 12 to 18 years old
Bulawayo is in the south west of the country and is the second city after
Harare. It has a population of about 750 000 and is important for heavy
industry. Commercial activities in the surrounding area include mining
(particularly gold), cattle ranching, and some dairying and market gardening
close to town.
Weather: We are well into our summer and January is supposed to be our
wettest month averaging about 142mm with February averaging 109mm. Much of
the rain so far has been light so everything is very green but not much
water had gone into the supply dams but some very heavy rain in mid-January
has improved the situation although we are still on strict water rationing.
Daytime temperatures are in the mid- to upper-20's and nights cool to about
17'C, although last week was quite a bit cooler and one day only reached a
maximum of 17'C. Rain often comes as heavy thunderstorms but sometimes is
lighter and may hang around for a few days.
