Edgbaston high school is approximately 2.5km south west of Birmingham
city centre. It is in a pleasant area of mixed residential, educational and
office accommodation. The school stands next to Birmingham botanical gardens
and faces south, overlooking playing fields, railway and canal to Birmingham
university about 1.5km away.

Observations at 10.40am

The measurements are made in a playground area surrounded by school
buildings. The site is not good but we have had problems with theft and
vandalism when we tried other more suitable sites.

Instruments to be used - rain gauge, maximum and minimum thermometer in
stevenson screen, barometer with a check to Birmingham university weather
station.

The weather expected in late January and early February is a mixture of
approximately half the days with rain and cloud and half drier with cloud and
sunny periods. It tends to be damp and dismal most of the daylight hours.
occasionally there are sleet or snow showers but these are rare. If the sky
clears at night there is generally a frost.

average daily maximum temperature = 5 to 6 degrees c.
average daily minimum temperature = 2 degrees c.
average relative humidity = 80% approximately
average precipitation in january = 74mm with 17 rain days
average precipitation in february = 54mm with 15 rain days
