Question: Taking the weather of the last two weeks as the ONLY consideration, where would your students like to have been (a) most, (b) least during the past two weeks, AND WHY?
The following replies have been received..........
James McEwen, Radley College
In the last few days, despite the heavy rain, Hilton, South Africa still sounds like the best place to be in. The temperatures are perfect with highs around 27 deg C andlows around 18 deg C. The wind hasn't got above 10kph and although they are having their worst ever floods for fifty years, I am a big fan of natural disasters! I love photography so I will be able to take lots of photos of the floods.I am confident that it won't be long before the floods dry out as once the sun is out the water will evaporate very quickly. Then I will be able to watch the cricket and the African's Nations Cup in pleasant conditions.
I would hate to be in Dover. The conditions sound dreadful especially as the wind speed has been above 117kph. The weather seems very unpredictable as one day the temperature is 18 deg c and the next day it is down to 5 deg C.I would hate the change in climate. There is also a lot of rain around which makes the conditions even more unpleasant.

Best Place: I would like to have beeen in Oman from the 31st January to the 10th February. This is because the temperature was high, with the highest being 21 deg C and the lowest 20 deg C. With this, there was little wind so getting a sun tan wouldn't be too hard as the sun's rays are concentrated near the equator.
Worst Place: The worst place to be would have to be Dover with winds gusting up to 117 which would make even going outside dangerous. The temperature seems to have varied a lot. Rain is also reported on most days. Dover sounds to be the most undesirable place in the world to be with these extreme changing conditions.

Trinity school is in the south of Australia, where they are experiencing a really hot summer at the moment. The temperature has been constantly high over the past two weeks, with a maximum of 40 deg C, which is why I would like to go there.
Dominic Evans, Radley College
I would like to have been in Two Boats, Ascension Island because it has a pleasant temperature reaching a maximum of 30 deg C and a minimum of 20 deg C on average per day. It has an average 60% relative humidity each day, a bit dry, but it is described as hot and humid even though the general discription each day is hot. It sounds like a hot tropical paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. There is little wind and the pressure is high.
The place I would least like to have been is in Edmonton, Canada because it had temperatures reaching &endash;23 deg C in the last few weeks.
Julian Wayne, Radley College
I would like to be at Peterhouse in Zimbabwe. This is because it gets up to 30 deg C at the hottest time so you do not get too hot. The coolest it has got is 18 deg C which is not too cold so you can go around in T-shirts and shorts and can do a lot outdoors without getting too cold. Also due to the temperature it is good for safaris which I would enjoy. It is overcast which is good so you would not get the glare of the sun.
The place that I would not like to be is in Southmoor, Australia. This is because the temperature gets up to 40 deg C, which is too hot for me.
Bobby Richmond Watson, Radley College
I would like to go to the Bors school in Sweden. At the moment it is very cold there. The maximum temperature being 4.8 deg C and the minimum being 1.8 deg C on the 10th of February 2000. The skiing would be excellent. There is a high pressure so that the sky would be clear and cold air.
The place that I would lest like to go to would be Southmoor in Australia because it would be way too warm for me. The temperature goes up to 40 deg C which is too much for me.

The place I would most like to be is Disneyland because it is hot and fun. The place I would least like to be is the Antarctic because it snows all the time and you need to live in an igloo.
Ross
The place I would most like to be is Disneyland because my favourite character is Mickey Mouse and it is warm. The place I would least like to be is Iceland because it is cold.
Jordan
The place I would most like to be is Spain because it is hot. The place I would least like to be is Sydney because it is too hot.
Shaniece
The place I would most like to be is Dubai. I would like to be in Dubai because it is hotter than Sheffield. I would not like to be at the North pole because it is too cold.
Emily
The place I would most like to be on holiday in is Spain. I would like to be on holiday because it is sunny. The place I would not like to be is here because it is not sunny.
Christie
The place I would not like to be is Iceland because it is cold.
Nicholas
The place I would most like to be is Australia because it is boiling hot.The place I would least like to be is Iceland because it is mostly cold.
Jack
The place I would most like to be is the North Pole because it would be more likely that the anemometer would work and it would be very windy.

The majority of the students have indicated that they would have loved to be in warm but dry places. A few stated that they loved the rains and hence would love to be in this part of the world at this time of the year. A very small number said they would love to be in a cold place at this time of the year in order to experience snow.

My students agreed that based only on weather they would prefer to stay in Hawaii. About 40% are Army dependents from a nearby military base. They have seen other places. Those students born here have mostly never seen other places. They want to see snow, but they generally don't want to live in a place with it. Maybe my descriptions of shovelling out the driveway so you can go to work only to have a snow plow zoom past and plug it up were too vivid!
We are finally getting typical winter rain. It has showered for two days. We don't have the rain gauge out, but it is probably about 25 mm each day. A cold front must be passing to the north with the end over us. Although the front moves along, the south end often stalls in our area. Even the morning news mentioned the rain bringinng relief from the drought. The deep wells that supply our drinking water all have salt at the bottoms in any year. In a dry year, the thickness of the fresh layer decreases. After three dry years, we need lots of rain. The water we drink today is from rain at least a decade ago. But consumption goes way up in dry weather. Even paradise has its problems.

The Best and Worst Places chosen by girls at Micklefield, South Africa Between us we decided that the worst place would be humid and dark and as we looked through the spreadsheet we found a place that met those conditions - Ireland. The school there is in Galway. It was dark and with dense cloud cover and the temperature was 6deg C on the 29 January. Jess R and Mirri ======= I would love to go to the Pacific Islands of the USA. The temperature was 29 deg C and there was little rain. I chose this country because I love to swim and islands are perfect for that. It has a hot but bearable temperature and is perfect for me. Kathleen and Sophie ======= Tamara and Sam would adore a holiday in Switzerland - not only is there divine Swiss chocolate there was a sunny clear day with a temperature of 24! The area which we would probably go to is Versaix. ======= Christine and Lauren would love to go to Rumania which is in the northern hemsphere. We have never been in snow before so we chose a place in the snow. It had a temperature of 2.7deg C and had quite slow falling snow. ======= The place we did not want to go to is Swindon in the UK because it is gusty, dull and cold. First we both don't like the cold and secondally we both hate when the sky is dull. We also hate gusty, windy weather. If the weather was not like this we would be glad to go. Katherine and Lisa ======= My best place. I would like to go to Portugal. This is because the temperatures are comfortable. The days were sunny and there was very little cloud. There was also very little wind and rain. Sarah ======= We would love to stay in Edmonton, Canada for the 2 weeks because of the cool temperatures and sometimes snow or ice. Compared to our temperatures in South Africa it is absolutely wonderful. Jessica W Margaret Dugmore (Computer Co-ordinator)
