Age of Buildings: Georgian

Few Georgian buildings are now left in Reading. Unlike Bath, at the other end of the Kennet and Avon Canal, the town did not have a ready supply of stone. Many of the towns Georgian buildings were made out of local brick, of which there was plenty

What to look for

  • Plain brickwork
  • Portrait windows which slide up and down (Sash windows)
  • Columns around doors
  • Half round or triangular sections above doors and windows
  • Symmetrical buildings

  • Terraced House in Southampton Street
  • Public Building: St Mary's Church in Castle Street
