Age of Buildings: Older

Few buildings of this age survive in Reading. The three original town churches are the main examples, although there are a few houses in the town centre.

What to look for

  • Stone built churches
  • Houses have a frame made of timber
  • Windows originally very small and open outwards (casement)
  • Town houses jettied (upper storeys stick out over pavement)
  • Hand made tile roofs- the tiles are often different shapes and sizes
  • Roof line not straight- the wood has bent over the years.

Examples

  • Public Building: St Mary's Church
  • Town House: now offices, Castle Hill
  • Timber framed cottage: Southampton Street.
