| Age
of Buildings: Older
Few buildings of
this age survive in Reading. The three original town churches are
the main examples, although there are a few houses in the town centre. What to
look for
- Stone built churches
- Houses have a
frame made of timber
- Windows originally
very small and open outwards (casement)
- Town houses jettied
(upper storeys stick out over pavement)
- Hand made tile
roofs- the tiles are often different shapes and sizes
- Roof line not
straight- the wood has bent over the years.
Examples
- Public Building:
St Mary's Church
- Town House: now
offices, Castle Hill
- Timber framed
cottage: Southampton Street.
