Reading became a much bigger town in Victorian times. New areas of
the town were developed away from the town centre for the workers at
Huntley and Palmers, Suttons
Seeds and Simmonds Brewery. Trams connected
these new areas with the town centre and the factories.
What to look for
- Brick built (often
using Colliers bricks from Tilehurst)
- Slate or local tile roofs
- Chimneys
- Patterned brickwork
- Portrait windows
which slide up and down (Sash windows)
