Schools of Art and
Science
The School of Art was opened in West Street in 1860 and the School of
Science in 1870 in Blagrave Street (in the old Reading
School building). These provided further education after school.
The old Reading School Building was demolished and in 1882 the two schools
combined and opened in a new building in Valpy Street. In 1892 the two
schools became part of Reading University Extension College. A department
of Agriculture was organised in 1894 and the British Dairy Institute
was moved from Aylesbury to Reading in 1896. This took over several
nearby buildings, including the Hospitium of the Abbey, they eventually
moved to London Road in 1906 which was given to the College by Alfred
Palmer, son of George Palmer, and included George Palmers former home
The Acacias. After more donations from the Palmer family the College
became Reading University in 1926.
