Reading School Board
The Reading School Board was set up in 1870 after an act of Parliament
which said that all children should have an education. Within five years
four new "elementary" schools were set up: Coley, Katesgrove,
Silver Street and Newtown. The board handed over its schools to an Education
Committee in 1902, by which time there were 12 board schools, 11 Church
of England and 1 Catholic School.
