Reading Abbey opened the first school in the town, perhaps soon after the Abbey was founded in 1121. By 1485, Reading School, as it was to become, was moving within the abbey. It survived the dissolution of the abbey. Between the dissolution of the abbey and Victorian times, various private schools were founded. Some have survived until the present, such as Blue Coat School, while others survived only a short while. The 1870 Education Act saw the introduction of schools for all, and many of the borough's schools date from soon after this date. Higher Education
through an Art School and then a University
Extension College was introduced to the town in Victorian times,
leading to the University being established in
1926.
