The Green School

The Green School named after the colour of the girls dresses, was the first school in Reading for poorer girls rather than the daughters of the well to do. It was founded in 1782 by senior aldermen on the council and the vicars of the churches. It started in St Mary’s Butts and moved in 1790 moved to a building in Broad Street where it stayed until 1880 when it moved to Russell Street.
