The Maiwand Lion

Forbury Gardens. In memory of 328 officers and men of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who died in a rearguard action in Maiwand during the Afghan Campaign of 1879 -1880. Unveiled by Lord Wantage in December 1886. Sculptor George Blackhall Simonds of the Brewing Family.


Queen Victoria Statue

Outside Town Hall. To celebrate the Golden Jubilee (50 years) of Queen Victoria’s Reign in 1887. Unveiled by Duke of Cambridge in July 1887. Sculptor George Simonds.


Fountain
St Mary’s Butts. Two tiered fountain to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign and to mark the completion of street improvements in the area.


George Palmer Statue.

Broad Street (moved to Palmer Park). In honour of George Palmer of Huntley and Palmers. Unveiled 4th November 1891, with George Palmer also being given the freedom of the borough. Moved to Palmer Park in 1930 due to traffic congestion.
