| Police In 1836 the watchmen
were replaced by the Reading Borough Police Force, with 30 constables,
two sergeants and two inspectors. The replacement of the watchmen was
a great improvement, as the watchmen were few in number and although
were supposed to have help from members of the public when in difficulty,
rarely did and did not tackle the problems on the street.
