Baptists

The Baptists began meeting in Reading during the Civil war. They had no church, did not sing in their service. After the Restoration they kept their meetings in secret, often meeting in a house in Pinkneys Lane, where if they were discovered they could escape by putting a plank over the Holy Brook and running away. John Bunyan, one of the most famous Baptists, came to Reading several times.
