The Congregational Church in Broad Street, now a bookshop, began with
a disagreement between the minister of St Mary’s,
Christopher Fowler, and some of his congregation. When Reverend Fowler
lost his post, some of his congregation met at his home instead. This
continued for a year, but in 1663 he was in prison and not allowed to
preach in Reading again. His place was taken by the Reverend Thomas
Juice who soon began to meet at the site in Broad Street. The Reverend
Juice sometimes had to hide from the magistrates who wished to put him
in prison.
