St Mary’s Castle Street

St Mary’s Castle Street

In 1798 there was a disagreement between members of the congregation of St Giles church. Many of the congregation left and founded a new church St Mary’s in Castle Street on the site of the old gaol. The chapel was very large, able to seat 1000 people. The church was built in the classical style and had columns and a bell tower added in 1840. The bell tower was demolished in 1960 as it was unsafe.
