Civic Offices

The Borough Council had outgrown its offices in the Town Hall. The town had grown larger in both number of people and area. The new Civic Offices were built on an area of old Victorian Houses between St Mary’s Butts and the IDR. The new offices and the police station were designed by Robert Matthew, Johnson marshall and Partners and were opened in 1976. Next door, the Hexagon, a modern theatre complex was opened in 1977. With the removal of the library in 1985, the only part occupied was the Museum and Art Gallery. Clock tower, Assembly Rooms etc. reopened 1989, Museum partly reopened 1993, reopened completely in 2000.

The County Council was in the County Hall in the Forbury from 1911. In 1980 the County Council moved to a new building at Shinfield Park The County Council itself was abolished in 1998 and the new Shire Hall bought by Foster Wheeler.
