Town Hall
By the Eighteenth Century the Town Hall, still in the upper storey of
the Abbey Hospitium, was beginning to become dangerous to use. In 1785
the old hall was demolished and a new one, designed by one of the towns
Aldermen, Charles Poulton, was built. The new hall had an assembly room,
in the classical style, and a council chamber next door, with portraits
of some of the people who had improved the town.
