High Bridge

Although the first bridge over the Kennet was on Seven Bridges street where the Kennet was split into seven different streams, the second bridging point at High Bridge meant that only three streams had to be crossed. High Bridge crosses where four of the streams have joined together, including the main stream of the Kennet. There was a bridge on this site at an early date, certainly John Speed’s map of 1611 shows the bridge at this point. In 1707 a new wooden bridge was built here, which was replaced by the present bridge in 1787. This stone bridge was designed by Robert Bretingham.
