Bridge

Reading Bridge opened in 1923 as a second river crossing. It was tested
by being loaded with as many steam rollers as possible. Before the bridge
was built, the only way to cross the river at this point was by a footbridge
across the lock and weir called the clappers which had been on this
site since 1603. It was from the Clappers that the Reading murderer,
Annie Dyer, threw the children in her care before she was caught.
