| After
the Siege
Lord Essex’s army now went into the town. There they soon started
to catch diseases, and more died from illness after the siege than had
been killed during the siege itself. The army stayed in Reading for
about a month before moving off, leaving a Parliamentary garrison in
the town.
After the First Battle of Newbury in September 1643, the Parliamentary
garrison withdrew and the King’s forces again came into the town.
