1915 The workhouse in Oxford Road was taken over by the military and
converted into Reading War Hospital. Redlands, Battle and Wilson Schools
were also taken over as hospitals. Country houses nearby such as Englefield
and Basildon were taken over as places where men out of hospital could
rest and get better. Readings population was increased by people from
London.
The Cooperative jam factory in Coley was taken over by the Royal Flying
Corps in 1916 for use as a technical training school. When the Corps
became the Royal Air Force in 1918 the factory stopped being used.
