1 London Street

London Street was once one of the most fashionable parts of town. On either side of its gentle uphill curve were elegant houses. In the days of the coach this was the main road to London, before they turned left into London Road. Although many of the buildings have been replaced with new buildings which try to blend in with the old, it is still possible to glimpse what the street would have been like in former times. It was in number 72 that Joseph and Thomas Huntley began to bake biscuits in 1822. As they were opposite the Crown Inn, they had a ready market from the coaches that left the inn to travel towards London.
