To continue to raise awareness of sustainable development in school and the wider community To develop sustainability in topic plans as a part of a two year cycle To plan for and hold focus weeks enabling the whole school to contribute to work on aspects of sustainability To increase pupil involvement in decision making through the workings of a committee
When we began our association with WWF-UK the concept of sustainable development was new to staff and pupils. Environmental Education was perceived as involving the planting of trees, gardening and pond dipping. These activities are still very important to us but we now have a wider understanding. We teach our pupils to understand that they have a role and a responsibility in making a difference to the future. WWF enabled us to provide time for staff to work together on curriculum sustainable development.
The focus weeks on Paper, Health, Fitness and Tree Planting have raised the profile of the project and have enabled us to share and evaluate ideas. This year we have been looking further afield and our focus has been on raising awareness of other cultures.
During focus weeks we invite parents and other members of the community to join us and they too have an important role to play in future developments.
The need to reduce, re-use and recycle is an established part of school life
Pupils and staff are now aware of sustainable development issues and as new staff join they become involved
The Eco-Schools Committee identified initiatives to improve playtimes by working with pupils and lunch-time supervisors
The mission statement of the school is now linked to sustainable development. We believe that much has been achieved and, although there is much more to do, we now have the structures in place to enable work to continue.
