The Eco Committee decided to have a focus event in the school grounds in May. Parents were invited to watch May Pole dancing, see the tree that was under the guardianship of their child and to help supervise the clearing of litter.
Thanks to the tremendous support from the parents everyone got involved and the site was cleared of litter. To keep everywhere tidy litter patrols were formed, which still operate today. Groups of volunteers are allocated a day once a fortnight, when it is their responsibility to keep the school tidy. We never have a problem getting volunteers!
After the success of the litter patrols we decided to create other patrols for different jobs. The energy patrol switches off lights in unused rooms and checks that taps are turned off. They also make sure doors are closed in cold weather. The Paper patrol collects waste paper from classroom recycling boxes and puts it into the on site paper bank. The local community share the Paper Bank and a Can Recycling Bank.
The school has undertaken several projects to promote an understanding of sustainable development.
Having agreed on the value of sustainable development we decided that for one Christmas we would decorate our school using recycled materials. Many inventive ways were found to create displays, including crisp packet Christmas trees and a Father Christmas made from milk bottle tops. We intended to show that effective display is not dependent on great expense and that what is important, is that children are fully involved in the preparations.
The party for the youngest children takes account of the fact that not all young children enjoy noisy games so a quiet room with toys was provided as an alternative. Food such as pizza and chocolate crispy cake was made by each class to share with the other classes. Father Christmas arrives at the party as usual but instead of bringing a small present for each child, he brings a present that the whole class can share throughout the coming year. In alternate years younger pupils visit Santa in the forest on Cannock Chase or at the farm.
