The rapid response information series for
schools
on development issues in the news
TUNE INTO
THE NEWS
The introductory edition of Global express
Tune Into the News has been produced as part of the Global
express series to support teachers in dealing with
high-profile and often controversial Third World news stories in
the classroom. It is broadly aimed at the 7-14 age range, helping
Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils to become better global citizens.
In addition to providing a context for the latest stories,
each of the Global express packs aims to address five key
areas:
- Media:
- How we can help pupils to make sense of media coverage of
global events and development issues?
- Stereotypes:
- What images or stereotypes do pupils hold about the
people and places involved? How can these be examined and
challenged?
- Empathy:
- How can we encourage pupils to empathise with the people
directly involved, particularly those in situations
different from their own? What links can they find
between the issue in question and their own lives?
- Points of view:
- What are the different viewpoints involved? How can we
ensure that pupils have access to a range of these?
- Causes and solutions:
- How can we enable pupils to explore the causes and
consequences of the situations portrayed in the news?
What ways are there to resolve the issues and move
forward?
Tune into the News contains background information, activity
ideas and photocopiable pupils' pages designed to be used in
conjunction with all future editions of Global Express.

Jon Snow, presenter of
Channel Four News has said of Global express, "This series
is a great advance and will really help children who keep
glimpsing events of their televisions make sense of the world
about them, as well as contributing to a core element of their
education. I think it's absolutely brilliant."
