NEWSGROUPS

Here are some newsgroups (usenet) you may like to try subscribing to You will need to use newsreader software (Netscape includes a newsreader or use Microsoft's Internet Mail and News) to download, read and participate in newsgroups.

Here are some tips for finding good groups.

*When you have downloaded your first complete list of newsgroups you will need to decide which to subscribe to. Don't chooses too many because some generate a lot of items. Try three or four to start.

*Have a look at the groups that begin with k12. The k12.chat..... groups are good for finding contacts for students.

*Groups that begin comp.os are computer operating system newsgroups. There is something to suit everyone here.

*There are a growing number of uk groups for a variety of subjects with a United Kingdom bias. Teachers should subscribe to uk.education.teachers and there is a uk.comp.os.win95 for you Windows 95 users.

Whatever you do try to read groups for a while before you start to send your own items to a group. Most groups have tight frames of reference regarding their use and if you send an off-topic item to a group you may well receive lots of mail telling you not to do it again! Many groups have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) which is posted to the group regularly. Try to read that before you participate.

Here are a few newsgroups you might like to have a look at.

uk.education.teachers
uk.education.misc
uk.education.16plus
k12.chat.teacher
k12.chat.elementary - newsgroup for primary age children
k12.chat.junior - newsgroup for junior high students (lower secondary)
k12.chat.senior - newsgroup for senior high students
