Bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, decorating and using industrial materials and tools were just part of the hands-on menu for children taking part in the Construction Roadshow being held at Knuston Hall on 15 and 16 October.
The 150 pupils, who represented six local primary schools, Croyland Junior, Irchester Junior, All Saints CE Primary from Wellingborough, Whitefriars Junior from Rushden, and Earls Barton Junior and Finedon Mulso, constructed brick arches, hung wallpaper around a door opening, assembled a working, scaled-down domestic water system and investigated the construction of a door in a frame and an opening window unit.
The Roadshow was jointly funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Northamptonshire Inspection and Advisory Service (NIAS) and the Education Business Links Organisation (EBLO) to enhance education business links and present role models in order that the children might learn and understand more about the construction industry.
The activities were flexible and connected to the National Curriculum by having a focus on technology topics such as buildings, materials, joining and fixing.

Simons Construction kindly hosted a site visit for primary school drama teachers. The aim of the site visit was for the teachers to learn about site safety with a view to discouraging young people away from building sites.
The project was funded by CITB and NIAS.
Marriotts Construction participated in the two week Essential World event organised by the Northamptonshire Constabulary. The aim of the event was 'personal safety' for children aged 10 and 11. Approximately 2000 pupils attended the event. Marriott's scenario was showing children about dangers on building sites.
