Engineering Connections

What is it?

Is a scheme to help member companies to get the best apprentices available, free of charge by working with the East Midlands Career Service.

 

What is available?

Potential apprentices indicate which companies they are interested in and complete an application form, which is sent to the company.

The application forms are sent to the EEF, who forward it to the selected companies.

 

How does it work?

Members are requested to complete a form indicating the potential number of apprentices they may wish to recruit.

All potential apprenticeships will be published via a leaflet/web page.

This will be mass circulated to young people throughout the East Midlands during early 1999.

Engineering Modern Apprenticeship Bursary

What is it?

The EEF have been closely involved from the inception with the design, development and implementation of the Engineering Manufacturing Modern Apprenticeship.

It offers young people an excellent preparation for an engineering career leading to an NVQ level 3 or higher.

What is available?

The EEF East Midlands Association allocate an annual bursary spread over a four year period, totalling £1,000 per apprentice

How does it work?

Member companies are given the opportunity to enter as many first year apprentices as they wish, by completing an application form.

The Apprentice(s) are asked to submit a written assignment to the EEF East Midlands Association. The assignments are judged by a panel of employers.

In addition an EEF representative will visit the company to interview the potential winners.

The final decision is based on the written assignment and the interview report.

GNVQ Engineering Scholarship Scheme

What is it?

GNVQ Scholarship link students and teachers with local employers to provide a real context for projects and assignments.

The selection criteria for the Engineering Employers Federation Scholarship is all students enrolled onto an Advanced Engineering GNVQ, minimum grade C in GCSE English, Mathematics and a Science subject.

What is available?

Companies have the opportunity to assign a workplace project to a GNVQ student. This is monitored by the EEF representative and the college.

Each student can apply for the GNVQ Scholarship regional prize of £250.00 and subsequently national prize of £750.00.

The companies involved in the scheme benefit by linking direct to a student, who undertakes a specific work based project.

How does it work?

Colleges which offer Advanced Engineering GNVQ, students are requested to complete an application form to apply for the scholarship scheme.

The EEF interview each student and select a number based on the interview report.

Students are linked to a company, with a one week placement and workbased project. This is monitored by an EEF representative.

The projects are judges by a panel of employers.

Technology Tree

What is it?

A partnership support programme for primary schools through the resource (human and material) of an Engineering related company.

To provide support for the National Curriculum in Design & Technology.

 

What is available?

A make and Build construction kit, and EEF Technology Tree Game. Plus a set of Personal Protective Equipment to be loaned out to schools.

The company can contact the EEF to loan the equipment to a local school.

It will enable a partnership to be established with the company and school.

How does it work?

The purpose of the game is to help the children focus their thoughts and to measure their perceptions about engineering. The game consists of an awareness survey and a number of quality acetate pictures and quiz sheets. The survey can be conducted both prior to the children’s involvement in the scheme and afterwards.

The quiz game can be implemented by a teacher to support the classroom activity, or by an Engineer to support his/her talk.

 

This scheme will go live in March 1999

Wise Outlook

What is it?

Wise Outlook is aimed at providing 13-14 year old girls in any form of secondary education with a practical experience of engineering project work. The practical experience of engineering project work is supplemented by a visit to a company which demonstrates the application of engineering in an interesting way.

Wise outlook is a joint Engineering Council, EEF and Engineering and Marine Training (EMTA) initiative run under the WISE umbrella.

What is Available?

Companies can be involved by arranging a half day visit to their company.

The visit would include:

Representatives from the company to attend student presentation at the end of the three day programme. (If possible a woman engineer)

Year in Industry

What is it?

Year in Industry is aimed at providing post ‘A’ Level students a years project secondment to an industrial firm before they decide on their appropriate degree course.

What is Available?

The EEF East Midlands will assist a company to provide a student, by working with colleges and universities.

The programme has well established links.

Companies should contact Nigel Chubb, Director and Chief Executive of the LEF East Midlands Association for further details.

The year runs from September to August.

How Does it Work?

Companies must provide a structured and approved training programme for the student. A Year in Industry support tutor is involved in the programme.

At present there are 20 medium sized engineering companies in the region involved in the scheme.
