Are lab coats safe?
A teacher was wearing a 67% polyester : cotton mixture lab coat that caught fire as she leaned over a non-luminous Bunsen burner flame (on a sunny day!). The molten fibres severly burnt her arm and body. We have heard of similar accidents before. When using small amounts of chemicals, a lab coat is not essential; it just protects your clothes and is not classed as personal protective equipment. If you decide to wear a lab coat, the safest material is thick cotton or a cotton-rich mixture.
