Monday 12th October

On the 9th October our class visited Salford Quays to study the bridges. I found our visit interesting for several reasons. I discovered that there were many types of bridges.Beam, suspension, moving and steel are just some of the bridges we use everyday. I also learnt how a suspension bridge is supported. Steel wires are connected to strips of metal underneath the bridge. The wires are also connected to a H shape formation overhead the bridge. The bridge rests on the strips of metal and doesn't collapse. It was interesting that we also learnt how moving bridges work. The smallest we saw had chains strapped to the sides to lift it whilst the biggest had heavy machinery to move it with a turnstile in the middle. Finally we did some sketches of the four bridges we saw. Those were beam, suspension and 2 moving bridges. We are collecting sketches so that we can design our own bridges and build them out of corrugated cardboard. Mine will be a suspension bridge.

Science lesson: 'Heart Song'
The heart is pumping, the heart is pumping,
Blood around,blood around,
Your body,your body,
Ribs protect it,ribs protect it.
It's the size of,it's the size of,
Your fist,your fist,
It is pumped,it is pumped,
To your lungs,to your lungs.
Picks up oxygen,picks up oxygen,
Gives it to,gives it to,
Your muscles,your muscles,
Makes them stronger,makes them stronger.

Art: Evaluation of L.S.Lowry's painting 'The Playground'
Season:On this painting it is Winter. You can tell this by snow on the ground , dull colours and the way the people there are dressed.
Colours:Most of the colours on the picture are white, black, blue, red and a mustard-yellow colour. Mostly the colours aren't scattered all over the place, but white and black are easier to spot , they aren't all scattered around.
Buildings:The buildings are all terraced houses and have tall smoking chimneys on the top. They are a red-brown colour and have old tall brick walls around their small gardens.
The people:The people are quite thin and are wearing dull clothes. The clothes look too big for the people wearing them. The people have no expresion or any detail to their thin faces.

Friday 16th October
I found our visit to the Mayor's Parlour interesting for several reasons. I discovered that you have to be a councillor for 20 years before you get chance to be mayor. Another thing I learnt was that after 20 year's of being a councillor you only get to be mayor for 1 YEAR!
I also I learnt that the mayor can be treated like a normal person when he is not wearing his chain.
It was interesting that there is over 3000 people worked for the Town Hall. The mayor has control over how long people can talk for in a meeting( well that's a good thing or you could be there until midnight)
Finally I never knew that the mayor lived in a normal house.
We aren't going to just keep the information, we are going to design our own Coat of arm's for our school.
