Trees
This afternoon we have been planting seeds to grow trees. A lady called Tammy helped us plant our seeds. The soil was made from coconut shell, as real soil would rot in the boxes. We have all planted a tree, each of us chose between oak and alder, most people planted oak, our teacher Miss Harland planted an oak tree. The plants that we planted were for the Millennum.
Tammy the teacher who helped us is from Red Rose Forest, she has brought us some goodies and badges that our local football team Manchester united has also got these badges. The badges say that we support the Red Rose Forest.
Tammy has to plant one billion trees in the next five years and by planting our seeds today, we are helping her to reach that target.
We were split into two groups, one group broke up the coconut shell by adding boiling water. Then they added minerals(food) which were in the fertilizer, and then they added crystal balls which contained water incase we forgot to water the plants. The other group were testing to see which seeds were bad and which seeds were good by dropping them in water, the seeds which were bad floated and that means there is nothing inside. If a seed was good it would sink.
Next we folded the beds, which were ribbed to guide the roots in a straight line down wards. At the end of the beds was a hole, this was to allow the water to drain out. We filled the beds with soil and then planted the seeds. We filled out a card to know whose plants belonged to whom, and what type of plant they were.
We will look after our trees by regulary watering them, once every three days, and turning the tray around so they don't all bend towards the light but instead they grow upwards. We really enjoyed our afternoon with Tammy and are excited about growing our trees. We should see shoots in about 2 weeks, we'll let you know.
