1.INTRODUCTION

CONTEXT AND DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL AND CLUSTER

Peases West is a rural Primary school set on the outskirts of Billy Row, a village approximately two miles from the market town of Crook, in the west of Co. Durham.
The building is of one-storey, modern design, opened in 1979, and now  incorporates a Nursery Unit, newly        developed and opened in 1993.
The school chiefly serves the villages of Billy Row and   Roddymoor, but also attracts some children from nearby Stanley Crook and other local villages. It is an area of high unemployment and social deprivation and many children face the difficulties inherent in such circumstances.
Billy Row is situated just to the east of Weardale. Most children  attend Wolsingham Comprehensive School on  completion of their primary education. For the purposes of this project, the Comprehensive is part of the Wolsingham Cluster Group along with ourselves, Stanley, Wolsingham, Stanhope Barrington and Rookhope Primaries.
