The Roman Invasion
The Romans tried to conquer Britain twice. Julius Caesar invaded in 55 and 54B.C.,
In 55B.C., he set sail to Dover where the Britons were waiting. The Britons were strong but the Romans won.
In 54B.C., Caesar returned. The Romans faced a new attack led by Cassivellanus a tribal king. Both sides wanted peace so the Britons agreed to pay Rome money every year.
In 43A.D., Emperor Claudius sent a Roman army to conquer Britain properly. The main battle took place near Rochester. After two days fighting the Romans won. Emperor Claudius brought elephants to Britain to impress his new people.
